Thanks for suggesting that we immerse ourselves in the outdoors. It has been so beautiful lately that I have been able to get out more. It really has been helping clear my head and give me good ideas. Thanks!!

Ranjani, aj, thank you a lot on that one.

I'll get the link format changed soon, which is simple enough in old Wordpress.

As for keywords, you'll have to give me pointers I'm afraid. Whilst I can waffle for hours about social policy, when it comes to coding and the Internet I'm not quite so savvy.

By header tags I'm assuming we're not talking those old-fashioned metatags that search engines are increasingly ignoring due to spam, but breaking down posts into segments, each with a separate header using key words pertaining to the content of the entry below it?

@ck - You have no keywords in your header, thus, it'll take Google a lot longer to pick things up strictly from the content itself.

Plus, you also are not using clean urls (permalinks), which decreases SEO.

I'm not very experienced in SEO, which is probably what you're looking for, but I did find you an article that might help out. <a href="http://www.alistapart.com/articles/ambientfindability/" title="Findability" rel="nofollow">Read it here</a>, and if you like it, A List Apart has a few more on the topic :)

I'm just in the process of having my new design completed at its new domain and have a question to add to the article: how do I go about adapting the site so that it's readily picked up by search engines with various terms?

Google picks the site up if my name is searched directly, but nothing else so far as I'm aware (is there, in fact, also a way to find out what terms my site is picked up by currently, if any?).

<strong>Darren:</strong> Glad you liked it, and thank you :D

<strong>Jonathan:</strong> That's about where I want to be when I'm writing -- completely oblivious to everything but what I'm doing. That's amazingly admirable of your girlfriend -- and don't worry about the design (it's very cute, and on top of that, clean and readable!); I've been in that boat so many times :P

Yes, I agree: content first but here is the irony of the birth of insearchofdessert:
My girlfriend is a writer and of course cares about content, quality writing and interesting texts.
I do care about design, I'm just an amateur but do love design and tried my best when creating her blog. I therefore spent nights and days finding the little details that I wanted to fix, the colors that didn't perfectly match and of course the new shape that'd become the new "round corner" of the web... Meanwhile, my girlfriend was writing, using her blog not even noticing that it was evolving in something cleaner and hopefully better looking :-)

I definately think content is the most important. What's the point of a gorgeus website without any reason to be there.
Nice article. I think I may have to add you in to my aggregator lol

I definitely feel that the content should come first; when I did my redesign (in chunks), I had to find a way to show off my writing without being overbearing. It was a lot of fun, even though it took a lot of work I'd never have imagined. I can't count how many things I chunked trying to get it to where it is now.

Thanks! Glad you liked it :) I'm trying to battle writer's block and that means I have to finish the things I started both here and on my site :)

Good article.

When I made my site fairly recently I spent so much time getting the articles page looking good that I neglected the other sections of the site. At the moment I'm taking a close look about how the design can be realigned and made into a more enjoyable experience without changing too much.

There was another article recently saying how you should design your content before worrying about the rest of the design, I think this is a good approach because it means you really get a chance to consider the important part of the design without having to force it in later.
