The Next Devlounge Design – Have Your Say!

A new Devlounge design is planned, and work will begin shortly. Naturally, we’ll keep you, our faithful readers, posted on this, with continuous screenshots to hear what you think.

At this point there isn’t much to show, we’re planning and playing around mostly. There are, however, some requirements that we want to meet.

  • Stay true to the Devlounge look and feel. Don’t expect anything too drastic, we want to stay true to the clean style Devlounge sports today.
  • Networking with related Splashpress sites. There are two other sites (one launched, one upcoming) in the Splashpress network that Devlounge will be networked with, and the idea is to do something good with that. At the very least, there will be sub-network linkage.
  • Suitable ad formats and placements. Devlounge’s income is based on ad sales, so we’ll tweak the advertising options a bit. Don’t worry, we won’t cram the site full with nasty ads, expect something similar as to how it is today.
  • A more flexible content flow. If possible, we want to make features stand out more, while giving room to shorter posts as well. This without cluttering the site, and not breaking with the Devlounge feel that we all know and love. A challenge for sure.

So what do you think? Your opinion counts, so please chip in and tell us what you want from the next Devlounge design!

I think you have enough clean design and aesthetics, if some changes must be done, it may try to join the web2.0 design elements.

I’m glad to hear that you are keeping much of the look and feel the same. I am in the process of overhauling my theme and Devlounge is one of my benchmarks.

The comment that I have regarding content flow and Splashpress networking is that you may have an opportunity to take on some elements of a “news” theme. Specifically, 2 or 3 story column at the bottom. That way you can give the higher volume of posts the appropriate visibility/linkage they need… without cluttering the sidebar or the main post area.

    My 2 cents,
    Bob

That’s cools idea.Specially Idea number 2 & 3 will keep more content on this site. And is good for devlounge.

Most of the devlounge design’s are cool, that’ aj.I think you should consult aj about this.As it was his project maybe he still knows what is good for Devlounge.

Maybe once you design new theme, you can giveaway old themes to users. That is what Aj used to do.It’s all on your court now.

The design looks very great. But as for the requirements listed, it is really a very great plan for devlounge.

Honestly, I don’t give a crap about Slashpress. DevLounge is its own “brand,” and I don’t want to see recycled articles from it’s “network” posted on here as well.

I mean, I’m fine with linking the sites on here, but anything more than that, and I’d be less tempted to visit here. The quality of the content posted as of late are pretty bleak as it is.

Jordan, I gotta agree with you… the link-hover-popup ads are irritating at best; the content has gone from interesting to bland; the readership has gone out the window…

Who cares what you do with the design… Content is king. Not aesthetics. Do more interviews, post more interesting topics… get readership back and then worry about how it looks… NOT visaversa.

Jordan, don’t worry about reposted articles. All content on Devlounge will be original.

I want the theme to have an option which allows webmasters to choose whether they want to activate left or right column in their theme.

themes presently come with a right or left column and webmasters have no choice. they should be able to choose which column they want to activate.

also they should be able to choose the width of the column by typing in the column width.
