I like the design but I'm getting bored of the many minimalist designs and this just seems like another one. I can't fault your design capabilities as they are definitely better than mine but my personal opinion is that such a respected site should be creating trends not following them. However, I feel you've gone a bit to "blah" with the site. Along with the interesting articles there should be something visual to spark interest rather then blocks of color and text. Your page layouts are great, It's just very plain, simple, and stark. I love that style, but not always a good thing. Also, the extra content on the side is fine.
