I think an offline notice needs to be done in a way that fits your readers. IE: istock uses the vector graphics in a cute way. Stumbleupon also has a vector page done to portray the easy going nature of its users. For my www.bootstrappingblog.com website, the readers are more serious when it comes to business, so I'd want to do something more user friendly and serious for them. No headless ghosts or goblins with pitch forks :) Knowing the people who use reddit, I think a bit of humor is a good thing.
